Here at Montana Mountaineering we’re always working to make mountain education more accessible and support our community in SW Montana and beyond. It’s a big effort and we couldn’t do it without your support. Your support allows us to do things like offer scholarships for participation in our programs, develop high quality curriculum, and run low cost programs to help teach best practices for living a life shaped by mountains. Thank you for the support.

Check out our slate of offerings this summer for youth programs and rock climbing instruction.

Summer technical skills clinics

Join us at Uphill Pursuits for free evening clinics to brush up on your tech skills and get some pro-tips for maximizing the fun factor on a day of climbing. We’d love to see you there!

  • June 21st:

    • 6:30-8:00pm: "Staying Alive in Anchoring Terrain: Staying attached to the mountain"

      • Learn best practices for climbing anchors in different contexts, plus get some pro tips and tricks for efficient and intentional anchor building, and start moving beyond acronyms like “EARNEST” and “SERENE”

  • August 2nd:

    • 6:30-8:00pm: "Excelling at the crag with your friend, the Grigri"
      • Learn how to maximize the utility of the Petzl Grigri at the crag. While many climbers use a Grigri or other assisted braking device for belaying, their utility goes far beyond that. Come learn pro-tips and tricks for best using this indispensable tool.

No prior experience is required to take part in these clinics and instructors will be able to accommodate a wide range of educational needs. We’ll have equipment available for use, but you’re welcome to bring your own. These clinics are free, donations accepted.

Summer rock climbing programs

We’re excited to offer a slate of rock climbing programs this summer. From Touch the Sky camps for youth ages 11-15, to open enrollment programs for people of all ages, we’ve got programs to meet all your climbing needs.

All these and more can be found on the MMA website. If you’re interested in a program but need different dates, you can book a day of private instruction on our website.

JMT Applications open

Applications for the 2022/23 Junior Mountaineering Team are open! The JMT is a unique program for high school and gap year students to learn to move safely in the mountains and grow into community leaders. The season runs from September through June, with 1-2 weekend meetings per month. Scholarship support is available on a sliding scale based on need. Click here for more information and to apply!

Scholarship program update

We’ve been working hard to build up available scholarship funds for participation in MMA programs from the JMT and Touch the Sky youth programs as well as adult programs like avalanche courses, technical climbing progressions, and individual instruction. We now have a universal scholarship application for both kids and adults and funds can be applied toward any MMA program. That application and more details can be found here. If you’d like to contribute to the MMA Scholarship Fund, go here to make a contribution.
