Introduction to Traditional Climbing

Learn the basics of climbing traditionally protected routes using removable protection like cams, stoppers, and more in this one-day course. Whether your goals include some of the classic moderates around SW Montana or adventures further afield, this course is a great introduction to fundamental skills of trad climbing. Some prior climbing experience is recommended, but not required.

Topics include:

  • Removable protection types

  • Placing and removing cams and stoppers

  • Anchor-building principles and practice

  • Following traditionally protected routes

  • Route-finding

  • Mock-leading traditionally protected routes (dependent on group and individual goals/experience)

What’s included:

  • All technical climbing equipment, including harness, helmet, carabiners, rock climbing shoes (participants may choose to use their own equipment provided it passes guide inspection)

  • Guide wage, 3% land use fee, and all other administrative costs

Not included:

  • Food

  • Personal clothing layers

  • Transportation to and from the climbing site

Location

This program takes place in Hyalite Canyon or Gallatin Canyon. You’ll meet your guide at Spire Climbing Center in Bozeman, and caravan to the crag from there.

Pricing

$283.25 per person, at least two participants are required to run this program. If a program cancels due to low enrollment you may choose to get a refund or apply your course cost to another MMA program.
