First time learning about anchors or want to expand your knowledge on anchor building? Uses and limitations of material
Common knots for anchor building
Monolithic, two point, and multi point anchors
*Other topics may be included if time allows!*
Join us on Tuesday, 9/2 at 6:00pm!
This clinic is free for all participants. If you find these programs valuable, please consider becoming an MMA Member, or making a recurring donation to the MMA program. Your support helps keep these programs running.

Free Tech Clinic: Leave No Trace
Our free summer tech clinic series continues on Tuesday, 8/5/2025 at 6pm at Uphill Pursuits. If you can, please RSVP here so we can estimate number of attendees. Forgot to RSVP? You can still attend!
Between a dramatic increase in outdoor recreation on public land and budget cuts to land management agencies, it's important to consider the impact we have on the environment and other individuals during a day of climbing, running, or any other outdoor pursuit. Some of those choices include where we recreate, what we leave behind, and how we treat others. Approaching these situations with a Leave No Trace mindset means reducing our impact and fostering an inclusive and welcoming space.
It's important to remember that we all experience nature in different ways. Leave No Trace education is meant to suggest guidelines, not hard and fast rules. This Leave No Trace clinic will introduce decision-making framework informed by the following:
Knowledge of natural systems and how humans impact them, especially in large numbers
Skills that reduce human-caused impacts
Gear and tools that help you practice Leave No Trace

While so many clinics, classes, and workshops focus on climbing technical systems to get you up the mountain, knowing how to get back down is arguably more crucial.
On average, approximately one-third of all climbing related accidents are related to the descent.
This downcraft-based workshop will demonstrate several methods for trusted rappel configurations, how to “bail well”, and some tips and techniques for complex approaches to anchors in broken/blocky/alpine terrain.
We’ll have anchor boards and some hardware for practice, but you are welcome to bring your own harness, rappel device, locking carabiners, slings/tethers, and prusik cord to practice with. No experience necessary, though a basic understanding of climbing technical systems is recommended.
Join us on Tuesday, 7/1 at 6:00pm!

Free Clinic: Stepping Out - Tools for decision making in avalanche terrain
Join us for a free technical skills clinic at Uphill Pursuits. This clinic will focus on decision-making tools for moving in avalanche terrain. As the weather warms in the springtime, and the snowpack generally strengthens, many of us start stepping out into bigger terrain than we ski in mid-winter. This year especially, with an exceptionally thin and weak early-season snowpack, the decision to step out into avalanche terrain is one that will require close attention to detail and observation, and require a high level of intra-group communication, risk management, and decision-making.
We’ll introduce some of the frameworks that we use as guides to help streamline our decision-making, interpret information, and communicate with our group. Whether you’re just starting your backcountry skiing/riding journey, or have been touring for years, this clinic will give you some tools and techniques for traveling in avalanche terrain with informed decisions.
This clinic is free for all participants. If you find these programs valuable, please consider becoming an MMA Member, or making a recurring donation to the MMA program. Your support helps keep these programs running.
