Ice Climbing Progression
hone your skills for more advanced ice climbing objectives
The magical Hyalite Canyon – “an internationally recognized ice climbing venue” – is a perfect venue whether you are a beginner, just getting started, or a well seasoned ice climber.
If you are looking to progress your ice climbing skills to the next level, this is the class for you. Topics include: refining crampon and tool placement and use, practicing the nuances of body position for efficient climbing on steep terrain, placing and cleaning ice screws, anchor building including V-thread ice anchors, or just trying more challenging routes.
This progression allows for assessment and tailored coaching/teaching towards a defined goal. Additional days may be booked for further instruction.
Itinerary
You’ll meet your guide at Spire Climbing + Fitness at 8:00am (unless prior arrangements are made) for introductions and an equipment check, and then caravan up Hyalite Canyon to the Grotto Falls Trailhead. From the trailhead, it’s a short 10-15 minute walk to the crag (exact routes will depend on ice and weather conditions) where your guide will set up ropes and begin specific climbing instruction for the day. We plan to be back in Bozeman by 4:00pm.
What’s included:
All technical climbing equipment, including harness, helmet, carabiners, ice tools, and crampons (participants may choose to use their own equipment provided it passes guide inspection)
Mountaineering boots (sizes are limited, contact us EARLY if you will need MMA boots)
Guide wage, 3% land use fee, and all other administrative costs
Not included:
