Mountaineering Essentials
hone your skills for your mountain objective
This program is designed for climbers wishing to progress towards independence or just learn tools for more efficient travel on mountaineering objectives. Whether your goal is to climb Denali or Granite peak, this course will start you on the right track.
The curriculum covers the fundamentals of mountaineering: snow climbing, self arrest, rope management, efficient pacing, snow anchors, route finding, and clothing options. An introduction to glacier travel and relevant skills can be included, though the course takes place in non-glaciated terrain and further practice in glaciated terrain is recommended as a follow-up.
To solidify and gain competence in these skills, we offer follow up days on longer routes applying what was learned. Previous climbing experience is not required. However, participants should be in good physical condition and have some backpacking or hiking experience.
Most will benefit from booking this as a 2 day progression. This course is offered January-March. April-May offerings are dependent on snow and weather conditions. Contact us with questions.
